Ferguson Ruled Out as New Zealand’s Injury Woes Deepen

Lockie Ferguson

Auckland: New Zealand’s preparations for the fourth T20I against India have been disrupted once more, with Lockie Ferguson ruled out of the remainder of the series due to a low-grade tear in his right calf.

Ferguson experienced pain during the second T20I at Hagley Oval, where he featured in both of the opening matches. Subsequent scans confirmed the injury, and New Zealand Cricket stated on Thursday that he is expected to require another week or so of recovery before returning to play. Matt Fisher has been named as his replacement.

The timing is particularly cruel for Lockie Ferguson, who had been looking forward to appearing in front of a sold-out Eden Park crowd on Friday. Rob Walter, New Zealand’s head coach, acknowledged the disappointment while placing the setback in the broader context of a demanding international schedule.

“We’re gutted for Lockie and Matt,” Walter said. “Injuries are part and parcel of international cricket but it doesn’t make it any easier when you have to miss games”.

“Fortunately for Matt he was already going to sit out on the rest of the T20Is with an eye to his big summer schedule, and we’re hopeful he’ll still play a key role in the ODIs. I know Lockie was fizzing to play in front of a sell-out home crowd at Eden Park tomorrow, but he’s determined to be back for the ODIs.”

Henry Also Assessed

Matt Henry was also assessed after experiencing pain in his right quadricep during the second T20I. He has picked up a low-grade tear requiring one-to-two weeks of recovery, though his situation differs from Ferguson’s. Henry had already been scheduled to sit out the remainder of the T20Is as part of planned workload management ahead of a significant summer schedule, and New Zealand remain hopeful he will feature prominently in the ODI series.

Kyle Jamieson’s workload is also being managed carefully. He will remain in Wellington and is available for Canterbury’s second round of the Ford Trophy on Saturday, before rejoining the national team on Monday for the ODI series.

Dead Rubber at Eden Park

India have already sealed the series with an unassailable 3-0 lead, rendering Friday’s fourth T20I at Eden Park a dead rubber in terms of the outcome. For New Zealand, however, the match carries value as an opportunity to assess squad depth amid a growing injury list and to gather information ahead of the ODI leg.

The match remains sold out, a reflection of the appetite for international cricket in Auckland despite the series having been decided. For the hosts, the challenge now is to regroup with a depleted pace attack and find a performance that offers encouragement before the focus shifts to the longer format.
