Madushanka Rips Through Pakistan as Middle Order Folds Again
Lahore: Pakistan’s batting frailties resurfaced in familiar fashion on Tuesday as Sri Lanka’s Madushanka tore through their line-up to bowl them out for 110 in the fifth ODI of the tri-series.
Pakistan lost the toss and were put in to bat. The innings never found a foothold. Fakhar Zaman fell for 5, and Babar Azam, the only batter to offer meaningful resistance, top-scored with 29 before he was trapped lbw. No other batter managed to build anything resembling a partnership.
Madushanka finished with 5 for 34, a return that underscored the vulnerability in Pakistan’s middle order. Sahan Arachchige provided able support with 2 for 24, and the collapse gathered pace once the top order was breached.
Changes Fail to Address the Pattern
Pakistan had recently introduced Maaz Sadaqat and Naseem Shah into the side, changes intended to freshen the composition of the team. The outcome against Sri Lanka suggested that personnel adjustments have not yet resolved a structural issue. The middle order, presented with the task of rebuilding after early losses, offered little resistance.
For Sri Lanka, the bowling performance represents a significant boost. A target of 111 is well within reach, and their chase began steadily at 1 for 0. A victory would strengthen their position in the tri-series and improve their prospects of reaching the final.
Security and Stakes
The match proceeded without disruption, with strong security arrangements ensuring a smooth event despite the high stakes attached to the fixture. The tri-series has drawn attention in Lahore, and the organisers will take encouragement from the orderly conduct of the contest.
Pakistan’s bowling attack, featuring Naseem Shah, will need to defend a modest total if their side is to remain in the hunt. Sri Lanka, by contrast, have the opportunity to press home the advantage their bowlers have handed them.
The result of the chase will go some way towards shaping the final standings. For Pakistan, the broader concern is a batting order that continues to collapse in the same manner, regardless of the changes made around it. Madushanka’s spell exposed that weakness with precision.
