Jaiswal and Fernando Sanctioned After Heated Colombo Exchange

The tense atmosphere at the Sinhalese Sports Club spilled over on the opening day of the second Test, with India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka seamer Asitha Fernando both sanctioned by the ICC for inappropriate physical contact.

The incident occurred in the 17th over of India’s first innings, moments after Fernando had dismissed Jaiswal. As the wicket fell, Jaiswal walked towards the bowler and the pair engaged in a verbal exchange. Fernando then moved his head towards the batter, prompting Jaiswal to lean in, resulting in their heads making contact.

Both players were found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match).”

Match Referee Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel proposed fines of 25 per cent of each player’s match fee, along with one demerit point apiece. Neither player had any previous offences recorded in the preceding 24-month period.

Both Jaiswal and Fernando admitted their offences and accepted the sanctions, avoiding the need for formal hearings.

The clash came amid a compelling contest in Colombo. India, batting first after winning the toss, posted 475 for 8 before rain brought play to a halt in the second session on day two. Dhruv Jurel remained unbeaten on 95, five runs short of his second Test century, while the Indian innings was built on substantial contributions from the top order.

Sri Lanka, trailing 1-0 in the two-match series after their defeat in Galle, were desperate for early breakthroughs. Fernando’s dismissal of Jaiswal briefly lifted the hosts, but the heated exchange that followed added an extra edge to an already intense contest. The sanctions serve as a reminder of the ICC’s strict stance on player conduct, even in the heat of battle.
