Hampshire have bolstered their middle-order firepower with the signing of Indian batting all-rounder Ashutosh Sharma for the upcoming Metro Bank One-Day Cup, the club announced on Monday .

The 27-year-old, who represents Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, joins the Hawks for the 50-over competition which begins on July 21. The move is facilitated by the shared ownership between Hampshire and Delhi Capitals under the GMR group .

Ashutosh Sharma arrives with a growing reputation as one of India’s most destructive finishers. He holds the record for the fastest T20 fifty by an Indian batter, reaching the milestone in just 11 balls during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2023 . In the IPL, he has amassed 375 runs across the last two seasons for Delhi Capitals at an average of 31.25 and a strike-rate of 170 .

His most recent IPL campaign saw him score 171 runs from eight matches at a strike-rate of 181.91 . Over his IPL career, Sharma has accumulated 564 runs at an average of 29.68 with a strike-rate of 168.86 .

“We’re really pleased to sign Ashutosh for the One-Day Cup,” Hampshire Director of Cricket Giles White said. “He is a player of great potential and has done well for Delhi Capitals in the IPL recently so knows what it’s like to perform to a high standard. We look forward to welcoming him into the group and seeing what he can do in a Hampshire shirt as we look to go one step further than last year in the competition.”

Hampshire finished as runners-up in last season’s One-Day Cup and will be keen to go one better this year. White’s comments suggest Sharma will play a key role in that pursuit. His arrival adds vital experience and explosiveness to a Hampshire side that will be without several key players, including James Vince, Liam Dawson, and Tristan Stubbs, who are expected to be involved in The Hundred, which runs concurrently with the One-Day Cup .

In List A cricket, Sharma has scored 458 runs in 21 matches at an average of 24.10 and a strike-rate of 131.60 . He has also taken six wickets in the format . He began his domestic career with Madhya Pradesh in 2017 and currently represents Railways .

The right-hander has previous experience of playing in English conditions, having represented Middlesex Titans in 2017 and Gravesend in 2022 and 2023. He also played for Wigan in the Liverpool League in 2025, where he made an immediate impact by scoring a century shortly after arriving in the country .

Hampshire open their One-Day Cup campaign against Yorkshire at Scarborough on Tuesday .
