How to Recruit Meek the Mimic in Esoteric Ebb?

Esoteric Ebb Meek the Mimic

zIn the surreal, disco-infused fantasy world of Esoteric Ebb, not everything is as it seems—sometimes, the local signage is actually an ancient, chatty monster. If you’ve been looking for a companion that offers both tactical utility and a healthy dose of classic D&D-style snark, you need Meek the Mimic.

Recruiting Meek isn’t as simple as a Charisma check in a tavern. It requires a trek into the grime of the City Below, a specific bit of intellectual detective work, and the courage to throw pebbles at things that might bite back. As a Cleric who has spent way too many Shards of Jor rerolling Intelligence checks, I’m here to make sure you get this right the first time.

Meek the Mimic: Recruitment Quick-Ref

Step Objective Requirement / Location
1. The Intel Obtain the Passcode The Roots (Interact with the Wizard Statue).
2. The Stat Check Intelligence 12 Needed to “read” the statue/book for the code.
3. The Path Enter the Sewers Via Beware Monsters (Roots) or Northern City Below.
4. The Door Open the Door of Mystery Use the Passcode or a high Strength roll.
5. The Tactic Wake Meek Throw a pebble at the “Not a Mimic” sign.
6. The Finish Lower the DC Ask all questions to drop the Charisma DC to 4.

Step 1: Solving the Wizard’s Riddle

Before you go hunting for secret doors, you need the “Key.” Head south of Moongrove in The Roots to find a collection of petrified victims. Look for the Wizard Statue.

If you can’t interact with it, check your gear. You need an Intelligence of at least 12 to successfully recover the passcode from the book he’s holding. Once you have the code, you’re ready for the dungeon crawl.

Step 2: Navigating the Slums and Sewers

There are two ways into the sewers where Meek hides:

The Northern Entrance (City Below): Faster, but death-trap adjacent. It’s a hallway filled with scorch marks and skeletons. Save your game before stepping through, or you’ll be the next skeleton on the floor.

The Southern Tunnel (Roots): This is the “Beware Monsters” path. It’s safer for your health but involves a scrap with a Roper. Take the right fork after the fight to hit the sewer entrance.

Follow the tunnel south until you find the Door of Mystery. Use your hard-earned passcode (or flex your muscles if you’re a Strength build) to step inside.

Step 3: Don’t Touch the Sign!

Inside the secret chamber, you’ll see a chest and a sign that brazenly claims it is “Not a Mimic.” Here is the veteran’s tip: Do not touch the sign. If you grab it, you’re starting a fight you don’t need. Instead, opt to throw a pebble at it.

Meek will wake up, likely annoyed but willing to talk. Grill them with every possible dialogue option. Each question you ask peels away their defenses, eventually lowering the final Charisma check to a measly DC 4. Succeed, and Meek will hop into your inventory as a familiar.

While Meek is the star, the secret room is a treasure trove for early-game builds. Make sure you loot the alcove behind where Meek was hanging to find the Knock spell—this is mandatory for getting into the locked Tea Shop later.

  • Mimic Cloak: Massive help for ability checks.
  • Knock: Opens any locked door (game-changer).
  • 90 Crowns & Healing Potion: Standard adventuring essentials.

FAQs

Q: Does Meek actually fight with me?

A: Not in the traditional “party member” sense. Meek functions as an equipped familiar. You only get their stat bonuses and their unique (and often hilariously bad) advice if they are actively equipped in your inventory slot.

Q: I failed the Charisma check even with the DC lowered to 4. What now?

A: The dice gods can be cruel. If you have Shards of Jor, use them to reroll. If not, back out, take a Short Rest, and try again. Don’t leave the room until the mimic is in your pocket!

Q: Is it better to break the Door of Mystery or use the code?

A: If you have the code, use it. Breaking the door is a high Strength DC and, frankly, why waste the energy? Save those high rolls for the combat encounters waiting for you back in the City Below.

Q: Can I recruit Meek if I’m not a Cleric?

A: Absolutely. Any class can recruit them, but the Intelligence requirement (12) for the statue is usually the biggest hurdle for non-casters. Keep a few +INT potions or items in your bag just for this quest.
