IPL 2025: Virat Kohli Chases Orange Cap Glory in Qualifier 1

As the IPL 2025 playoffs kick off, Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) Virat Kohli is on the cusp of claiming the coveted Orange Cap in Qualifier 1 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium. With only four games left in the season, the race for the tournament’s highest run-scorer is heating up, and Kohli, currently fifth with 602 runs, needs just 78 runs to overtake Gujarat Titans’ (GT) B Sai Sudharsan, who leads with 679 runs.
Kohli, averaging an impressive 60.20 and boasting eight half-centuries this season, has been a cornerstone for RCB, who finished second in the points table with 19 points, just behind PBKS on net run rate. A win in Qualifier 1 would propel RCB directly to the final, giving Kohli only one more game to add to his tally. However, a loss would offer up to three more matches, including Qualifier 2 and potentially the final, to chase the Orange Cap. His recent form, including a 54 off 30 balls against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where he became the first player to cross 8,000 IPL runs, suggests he’s primed for a big knock.
The Orange Cap leaderboard is tight, with GT’s Shubman Gill (649 runs) and Mumbai Indians’ (MI) Suryakumar Yadav (640 runs) in second and third, respectively, both still in contention as their teams face off in the Eliminator. PBKS’s Shreyas Iyer (514 runs) and Prabhsimran Singh (499 runs) also have a chance to climb but are unlikely to challenge for the top spot. LSG’s Mitchell Marsh (627 runs), among others, is out of the race as their teams failed to qualify.
On the Purple Cap front, Chennai Super Kings’ Noor Ahmad leads with 24 wickets, but his season is over. GT’s Prasidh Krishna (23 wickets) and MI’s Trent Boult (19 wickets) are poised to challenge, with RCB’s Josh Hazlewood and PBKS’s Arshdeep Singh (both 18 wickets) also in the mix, depending on their teams’ playoff progression.
Kohli, who holds the record for the most runs in a single IPL season (973 in 2016) and won the Orange Cap in 2024, is also 31 runs shy of surpassing David Warner’s record of 1,134 runs against PBKS. With his eyes on both personal and team milestones, all eyes will be on the ‘Chase Master’ to deliver in this high-stakes clash.
