Feeding is limited to once a day for each critter and only a few color variants are seen in every location each day, which makes it crucial to get the timing right.
If you feed the same critter variant for several days in a row, it eventually becomes available for you as a companion. After you have unlocked it, you can choose it from your wardrobe and it will always be near you in the valley. Each companion has friendship levels too, which over time, will unlock passive bonuses.
