The Menacing Thespian (Leader) is one of the first true elite enemies you’ll meet in Octopath Traveler 0. He appears during the Master of Fame storyline in Theatropolis and guards a treasure chest in the backstage dressing rooms.
You don’t need to defeat him to progress the chapter, but beating him gives you valuable items and a powerful Mastery for your Scholar.
Below is a clear and simple guide to help you locate him, understand his attacks, and take him down safely.
How to Defeat the Menacing Thespian (Leader) in Octopath Traveler 0?
1. Locate the Menacing Thespian (Leader)
The enemy mentioned above is met in the Dressing Room area of the Theatropolis Amphitheater. To reach him, first, pass the main lobby, then go through the Rehearsal Room and down the stairs. After that, position yourself at the upper-right corner of the map to enter the corridor where a single room is located to your left.
The Thespian Leader stands there in front of the door, blocking your way to the treasure chest that is behind him.
Don’t mistake him for the types labeled “Ruffian” or “Guard” who are also found in other areas of the backstage—they are just the less powerful enemies with different weaknesses.
2. The Menacing Thespian’s Weaknesses and Stats
The Leader has the largest amount of HP and the strongest shield gauge in this whole dungeon, but is easy to predict once you have a clear understanding of what he does.
Level: 35
HP: ~6,068
Shield Points: 7
Respawn Time: 10 hours (real time)
Weak to:
- Sword
- Axe
- Staff
- Lightning
- Wind
Understanding Menacing Thespian Attacks
The Leader is a spell-focused enemy who boosts his magic damage before releasing heavy area attacks.
1. ‘Mental Concentration.’
He boosts his elemental spell. This is the major move that you must see. Once he casts it, the next hit will be much harder if he is not broken in time.
2. Wind Soulstone (AoE)
A strong wind attack that affects all the characters in the party. When the spell Mental Concentration is cast on it, this will be able to kill low-level allies. In case you cannot break him, then everybody should defend.
3. Bottled Flame
A fire spell that deals damage to a single target.
4. Basic Attack
A straightforward physical attack against one ally. His tactic is mostly targeting one at a time, but when he buffs himself, he gets ready for a big spell.
Recommended Party Setup
You don’t need a special team to win, but having characters who match his weaknesses makes the fight much faster.
Useful Characters
Phenn (Sword) – Excellent at keeping his shield low and tanking his magic hits with defensive skills.
Stia (Axe) – Good as both a breaker and a healer.
Alexia (Staff + Lightning) – Deals consistent weakness damage and punishes him hard when he is broken.
Shelby (Axe) – Helps break shields and provides solid support.
Anyone with Wind or Lightning spells can contribute, but the physical weapon users are most important for breaking.
Beat the Menacing Thespian (Leader) in Octopath Traveler 0
1. Emphasize Mental Concentration before Breaking Him
If he increases his elemental attack, consider it as your alert signal. His following action is mostly Wind Soulstone, which becomes very powerful when he is under the influence of the elemental attack.
Allocate part of your BP so that you can immediately strike with multiple weakness hits after he has cast the buff.
2. Use a Tank to Take the Pressure from the Single Target
A lot of his initial actions are directed towards one party member. Characters like Phenn can either provoke or just take those hits while your healer is healing them.
3. Hold on Big Spells for When He’s Hard-Up
Lightning Bolt from Alexia or any spell from Scholar strikes very hard once the shield is down. This is your principal source of damage output.
4. Defend if You Can’t Break in Time
If Mental Concentration goes up and you know you won’t break him before his next turn, have everyone defend. Surviving his AoE matters more than rushing damage.
Radiant Cornerstone is a material needed for upgrading facilities in Nameless Town. Double Slam Mastery (from the chest behind him) is a Tome-based Mastery that hits random enemies twice. This is especially useful for early Scholars, letting them break Tome-weak mobs efficiently.
