A new God of War spinoff is reportedly in development at Santa Monica Studio, and this time, Kratos may not be the one holding the axe. These reports indicate that the new game will take place in the same universe as the previous games and will follow Faye (also known as Laufey), who was Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mom.
Faye appeared in both previous God of War games in flashbacks or memories. This will likely be Faye’s first time having her own game, giving her a chance to shine as a female character.
Faye Takes Center Stage in a Prequel Story
The rumor first surfaced through leaker NateTheHate, who stated the game will be revealed this year and is targeting a first half 2027 release. IGN later reported it understands the information to be accurate.
Here’s what I have heard:
Yes, the game is set within the God of War universe & the lead character will be Faye. Gameplay is said to differ from the Norse God of War games with more of a focus on action.
Current plan: Reveal this year/release first half 2027 – barring any delay https://t.co/LGm9hsppNN

Faye has always had a substantial role in the Norse saga, despite her limited presence on screen. Her death and subsequent scattering of her ashes from the highest peak in the Norse Realms is what sets Kratos and Atreus off on their journey in The God of War Rebirth. We now know that Faye was actually a Jotunn with foresight, a secret she kept from even her family.
Because her fate is already known, speculation suggests this God of War spinoff will function as a prequel. It could explore her life before the events of the 2018 title, possibly even showing how she met Kratos and why she chose to hide her true identity.
A now deleted LinkedIn profile from a senior writer described the project as “a new franchise within the God of War universe.” Jason Schreier previously hinted that Santa Monica’s next project was not a new IP but might feel like one. Many now believe he was referring to this spinoff.
Action-Heavy Combat Could Redefine the Series

Reports claim the gameplay will lean harder into action compared to the Norse entries. Some insiders have even suggested combat closer in pace and intensity to Devil May Cry.
That raises an obvious question: how will Faye fight?
In the game, we see glimpses of Faye as she stands her ground against Kratos in brief moments of dreams that take place throughout the story. Taking this to the full scale of what Faye can do would allow for a completely different style of combat for players to experience. If the developers lean towards a faster-paced, combo-based combat system with this God of War spinoff then players will have an entirely new feeling to the franchise despite being based on mythological themes.
At the time of writing, Sony has not officially confirmed the project. Still, with multiple credible sources pointing in the same direction, it appears more God of War is on the horizon, just not in the way fans expected.
