New Zealand Cricket Unveils 2025-26 Central Contracts with Fresh Talent

New Zealand

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced its 20-player central contract list for the 2025-26 season on Tuesday, June 3, introducing four maiden contract recipients: Mitch Hay, Muhammad Abbas, Zak Foulkes, and Adi Ashok. This marks a significant shift, as notable players like Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Ajaz Patel, and Josh Clarkson were excluded from this year’s list, while discussions for casual playing contracts with stars like Kane Williamson, Devon Conway, Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Lockie Ferguson continue.

The new additions have already made waves. Mitch Hay set a world record with six dismissals in a T20I during his debut tour in Sri Lanka in November, while Muhammad Abbas smashed the fastest fifty by a debutant in men’s ODI cricket, scoring 52 off 26 balls against Pakistan. Adi Ashok, returning since his 2023 debut, and Zak Foulkes also earned their spots through standout performances.

The selection process, led by NZC’s Chief High Performance Officer Bryan Stronach, involved head coach Gary Stead, selector Sam Wells, assistant coaches Jacob Oram and Luke Ronchi, and Performance Manager Mike Sandle. NZC emphasized that selections were based on a statistical review of domestic and international performances across all formats, alongside the upcoming 2025-26 schedule and players’ potential to represent New Zealand.

NZC Chief Executive Scott Weenink praised the new talent, stating, “The contracts with Mitch, Muhammad, Adi, and Zak reflect the incredible talent coming through our system. These players have shown they can compete at the highest level, and their hunger to represent the BlackCaps is exciting.” He added, “We’re thrilled to see this group drive our team forward. The list captures the depth and versatility of our talent pool.”

With a packed season ahead, including the ICC T20 World Cup in February, the 2025-26 central contract list showcases a blend of emerging stars and established names, including Tom Blundell, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Jacob Duffy, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, William O’Rourke, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Ben Sears, Nathan Smith, and Will Young. This lineup signals a promising future for New Zealand cricket as they prepare to inspire fans nationwide.
