Mohammed Siraj Fined for Fiery Send-Off in Lord’s Test Drama

Siraj

Indian pace sensation Mohammed Siraj found himself in hot water after an intense moment on the fourth day of the third Test against England at Lord’s. The fiery fast bowler was slapped with a 15 percent fine on his match fee and handed one demerit point for an animated send-off of England opener Ben Duckett. The incident, which unfolded in the sixth over of England’s second innings, saw Siraj’s passionate celebration deemed “excessive” by the International Cricket Council (ICC), breaching Article 2.5 of their Code of Conduct.

The rule, designed to keep on-field antics in check, prohibits actions that could spark an aggressive reaction from a dismissed batter. Siraj’s in-your-face celebration after nabbing Duckett was seen as crossing that line, leading to swift action from the match officials. This marks Siraj’s second demerit point in a 24-month period, following a similar sanction during the Adelaide Test against Australia on December 7, 2024. With two points now on his record, the Indian speedster is halfway to a potential suspension, which kicks in if a player racks up four or more demerit points in two years.

Siraj, known for his high-energy approach, didn’t contest the charge. He accepted the penalty proposed by match referee Richie Richardson, sidestepping the need for a formal hearing. The charge was brought by a team of umpires, including on-field officials Paul Reiffel and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Ahsan Raza, and fourth umpire Graham Lloyd, who all agreed the celebration went too far.

The incident adds a layer of drama to an already gripping Test match, with Siraj’s fiery persona continuing to make headlines. As India battles England in this crucial series, all eyes will be on whether the pacer can channel his passion without crossing the ICC’s line again.
