Gary Stead Back in Black Caps Fold in High-Performance Coaching Role
In a swift return to the cricketing ecosystem, former head coach Gary Stead is back with New Zealand Cricket – just months after concluding his seven-year tenure with the Black Caps men’s team. The 53-year-old has been appointed to a high-performance coaching role, continuing his 34-year association with New Zealand cricket as both player and coach.

Stead, who played five Tests for New Zealand in 1999, stepped down as head coach in June this year and was succeeded by South African Rob Walter. However, his break from the setup has been brief, with NZC now bringing him back in a strategic capacity focused on development.
According to New Zealand Cricket, Stead’s new role will involve supporting player and coach development while contributing to high-performance programmes. The position requires an average commitment of three days per week, allowing him to balance external opportunities alongside his NZC responsibilities.
NZC Chief High Performance Officer Daryl Gibson welcomed the appointment, highlighting Stead’s deep connection to the game. “Gary’s knowledge and experiences in cricket is immense and the fact he’s still passionate and motivated to give back to the game in this country speaks volumes about his character,” Gibson said.
Stead expressed his enthusiasm for continuing to contribute to cricket in New Zealand, stating, “New Zealand cricket’s very much been at my heart for the past 30-odd years and to be able to keep contributing to the game I love is really special.”
He added that he remains driven to help players and coaches improve, and hopes his involvement can ultimately benefit the Black Caps and White Ferns on the global stage.
The appointment ensures Stead’s extensive experience remains within NZC’s high-performance network as the organisation builds towards major events, including the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup to be hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
