First-Ever BBL Game Outside Australia to Be Played in Chennai

BBL

Cricket fans in India, here’s something to get excited about. The Big Bash League (BBL) is coming to Chennai. Yes, you read that right.

Australian journalist Tom Morris has reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will make a special announcement during his visit to Sydney from July 8 to 10. He is expected to confirm that the 2026-27 BBL season opener will be played at Chennai’s famous Chepauk Stadium.

The game is likely to happen in mid-December. The start time will be around 8:30 to 9 PM Australian time. That works out to a perfect evening slot for Indian viewers. So get ready to watch BBL action live from your screens without staying up all night.

This is a big deal. It was the first-ever regular-season BBL match played outside Australia. Cricket Australia has been talking to the BCCI and local officials about this since February. Now, those talks seem to be paying off.

India has a huge cricket-loving audience. Bringing the BBL to Chennai opens up a massive market for the league. Plus, Indian fans get to watch top-quality T20 cricket featuring some of the best players from around the world.

Not everyone is completely happy. Some have raised concerns about visa issues for Pakistani players, given the political tensions between India and Pakistan. It’s a valid question, and how this gets handled will be something to watch.

But for now, fans are celebrating. The BBL is stepping out of Australia for the first time. And it’s choosing India as its first stop.

The countdown to December has already begun.
