England Hit With Another Injury Blow: Ollie Robinson Ruled Out of Oval Test
The 32-year-old seamer has been ruled out of the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval due to soreness in his right knee. It is a bitter blow for a bowler who had only just returned to the England side after two long years.
Robinson made a terrific impression in the Lord’s Test. He picked up seven wickets in the match. That included three in his very first over. It was the kind of performance that reminded everyone why he was once a key part of England’s attack.
His last Test before Lord’s was in Ranchi in February 2024. He bowled only 13 overs in that match and none at all in the second innings. Fitness questions have followed him throughout his career. This latest setback only adds to that story.
England confirmed that Robinson will stay with the squad. He is targeting a return for the third Test at Trent Bridge, which starts on June 25.
But for the Oval Test, the hosts will have to make do without him. And they already have other problems to deal with.
Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson are also unavailable. They are being investigated after a nightclub incident following the first Test win. That means England are forced into multiple changes.
Jofra Archer is the most likely name to come in. He has rejoined the squad after his IPL stint and has been training at The Oval over the weekend.
There is also a question mark over wicketkeeper Jamie Smith. He is waiting for the birth of his second child, so his availability is not certain yet.
The visitors have had to adjust their plans too. Kane Williamson has retired from international cricket. Will Young has joined the squad as his replacement for the second Test.
It is shaping up to be a fascinating match. But for Robinson, it is another frustrating pause in a career that has seen too many already.
