Sophie Molineux Appointed Australia Women’s Captain, Ushering in Post-Healy Era
Australian women’s cricket has officially entered a new chapter with the appointment of Sophie Molineux as the all-format captain, succeeding the retiring Alyssa Healy. The 28-year-old spin-bowling all-rounder will take charge after Healy’s farewell series against India, marking a significant leadership transition for the world’s most successful women’s cricket team.

Molineux’s rise to the top is a story of remarkable resilience. Since her international debut in 2018, she has overcome multiple serious injuries—including foot and knee issues that sidelined her for over two years—forcing her to miss major triumphs like the 2022 Ashes, Commonwealth Games gold, and the 2022 ODI World Cup. National selector Shawn Flegler highlighted her “resilience, composure and proven domestic leadership” as key factors in the decision.
She will be supported by a strengthened leadership group, with Tahlia McGrath continuing as vice-captain and Ashleigh Gardner elevated to the deputy role. “Ash and Tahlia provide complimentary skills in support of Sophie and are also both capable of leading the team as stand-in captain if required,” Flegler added.
In a fitting farewell, Healy will captain Australia in the ODI leg and the one-off day-night Test against India, starting February 15, before handing over the reins to Molineux for the T20Is and beyond.
The squads for the India series see a recall for all-rounder Nicola Carey, while experienced pacer Megan Schutt has been dropped from the ODI setup following Australia’s disappointing 2025 World Cup campaign.
Molineux’s first major challenge as full-time captain will be the 2026 T20 World Cup in June, as she aims to maintain Australia’s era of dominance with a refreshed leadership vision.
