Another One Bites the Dust: Johan Botha Exits as Queensland and Heat Coach
Big changes are sweeping through Australian domestic cricket. The latest name to leave the coaching circuit is Johan Botha.
The former South Africa off-spinner has stepped down as head coach of both Queensland (Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup) and the Brisbane Heat (BBL). This move comes even though he still had one year left on his contract.
On Tuesday, Queensland Cricket officially announced they had accepted Botha’s resignation.
You might wonder why the split happened. On paper, Botha’s record wasn’t terrible. Queensland finished third in both the Sheffield Shield and the One-Day Cup this season. In his very first year (2024-25), he even guided them to a Shield final.
However, the Big Bash League (BBL) was a different story. When Botha took over, the Heat were the reigning champions (winning the title in 2023-24 under Wade Seccombe). But under Botha’s watch, they finished fifth and then seventh. That drop in performance likely made things tough for him to keep his job.
Queensland Cricket CEO Terry Svenson thanked the coach for his efforts. “While we haven’t achieved all of our on-field goals in that time, Johan has made a strong contribution towards the development of the next generation of players,” Svenson said.
Botha is not alone. It seems like every state is changing its coaching staff this year. Greg Shipperd was let go by New South Wales and the Sydney Sixers (Brad Haddin and James Hopes have taken over). Trevor Bayliss left Sydney Thunder; Andrew Flintoff is the new boss there. Adam Voges left Western Australia after eight years.
With the IPL 2026 season just around the corner, all eyes will be on whether Botha heads back to the franchise circuit or takes a break from the game.
