The Dogs Know First is a short Wandering Tale in Where Winds Meet that focuses on observation rather than combat. The quest can feel unclear because it gives very little direction.

1. Start The Dogs Know First Quest
This quest can be initiated after you have already unlocked Heaven’s Pier, then moved the main story forward, and talked to the Wayfarer on Moonveil Mountain. Once Heaven’s Pier becomes accessible, head over to your journal and pick The Dogs Know First from the Wandering Tales section.
The quest unfolds in the Qinghe region and it will be activated close to Heaven’s Pier, primarily at night time.
2. Find Butter at the Brewery Backyard
Move towards the Brewery Backyard Boundary Stone at Heaven’s Pier. As you get there, you will find a dog, Butter, who is making a horrible noise at a man who is taking shelter under a tree. The man is not able to move as the dog is not allowing him to come out.
By this scene, it is clear that the situation involves the dog and not the man.
3. Find the Meaty Bone
Leave the Brewery Backyard and head back toward the entrance of Heaven’s Pier. Look near some wooden crates close to an NPC called Mu Bai. On the ground, you will find a Meaty Bone.
It is easy to miss, so move slowly and check the ground carefully before leaving the area.
4. Feed Butter to Calm Him
Go back to Butter and interact with him. Give him the Meaty Bone from your inventory. Once you do this, Butter immediately stops barking and moves away.
The man under the tree then runs off without saying much, which signals that the situation has been resolved.
5. Collect the Mysterious Token
Once the man has departed, look at the crates close to where the dog was standing. One of the crates will have an item on top of it. Take it and you will get the Mysterious Token, which looks like the Dragon Crest Token: Yin in your inventory.
This is the important item needed to complete the quest.
6. Deliver the Token to Complete the Quest
Go to the Blissful Retreat Boundary Stone. A little before the entrance, Tang Bao will be sitting near the road. Have a chat with him and present him the token.
The quest is completed with a very brief discussion. There is one more NPC who can respond to the token, but giving it to Tang Bao is the primary and proper way to wrap up the quest.
The Dogs Know First Quest Rewards
Once the quest is complete, you can claim your rewards from the Wandering Tales menu. You receive Echo Jade, Qinghe exploration progress, character EXP, and coins, making this an easy and rewarding side quest.
