Valve has added a brand-new hero to Dota 2 with Patch 7.40, and he is unlike anything the game has seen before. His name is Largo, and he is Dota 2’s first true bard-style hero — a musical frog who supports allies through rhythm, timing, and control.
Largo launches alongside one of the largest balance updates in recent years, so large that Valve built a separate website just to host the full Patch 7.40 notes.
Largo Brings Music to the Battlefield
Largo can be seen as a melee support hero who mainly relies on songs rather than simply inflicting damage. As per the lore, he is the leader of the bardmonk order and uses music as a means to navigate, safeguard, and uplift the people around him.
Rather than using regular spells, Largo plays his music according to the state of the game, thus allowing the teammates to be quicker, consume less mana, or even make it through the battle longer.
The concept of his character has a strong influence of his amphibian quality. Largo is skilled at using a long tongue, forming tiny frog friends and playing a lute at the same time while he is performing. The amalgamation gives a character that feels kid-like in its nature but requires high skills to be played properly.
How Largo’s Abilities Work in Dota 2
Largo’s abilities focus on control, positioning, and team support.
His tongue-based ability lets you pull allies or enemies a short distance. When used on allies, it helps save them from danger. When used on enemies, it deals damage. If the pull removes a status effect, Largo gains short health regeneration.
Another skill summons frog creatures that repeatedly slam the ground. These attacks damage enemies and briefly interrupt them, making the ability useful in both fights and area control.
Largo also has a support spell that lowers mana costs for an ally while echoing part of their spell damage over time. This allows spell-heavy heroes to stay active longer in fights.
A Rhythm-Based Ultimate Ability
Largo’s ultimate ability, Amphibian Rhapsody, is what truly sets him apart.
When activated, Largo stops attacking and enters a musical performance. His ability bar changes into three songs, and each one only works if you activate it on the correct beat. Hitting the rhythm grants stacking bonuses that improve his defense and reduce mana costs. Missing the beat removes those stacks.
The songs provide different effects, such as increasing spell damage, boosting movement speed and resistance, or improving healing. This makes Largo’s ultimate powerful but risky, as timing directly affects its strength.
A Hero That Rewards Skill and Coordination
Largo is the most suitable character for the support or utility roles and is a good asset to the team. He can be played either as a starter or a defensive support depending on the tactics you apply with his songs and the position changing tools.
His abilities acknowledge the players who are able to control the timing, positioning, and the whole team awareness but not just mechanics.
Moreover, Valve has also introduced the Aghanim’s items which give the access to the new upgrades that open up his abilities even further, thus, allowing more intricate song interaction and extra damage effects.
Dota 2 Patch 7.40 Information
While Largo is the highlight, Patch 7.40 also includes major changes across the game. Several heroes have been reworked, the neutral item pool has been refreshed, and map and terrain updates are expected to affect competitive play.
The update arrives during ongoing holiday events, with bonus rewards and limited-time content available for players who log in during the festive period.
