Steve Smith Returns as Captain for Ashes Opener After Cummins Injury

Steve Smith

Steve Smith will lead the Aussies in the first Test of the Ashes 2025. Cricket Australia has confirmed that the regular captain, Pat Cummins, has been ruled out due to a back injury. The 32-year-old fast bowler felt some back stress in September 2025 after experiencing discomfort following the Caribbean tour.

Smith, who has stepped in on occasions in Cummins’ absence will serve as the skipper. Having an impressive 5-1 win record as stand-in captain, Smith will take the leading role in the Ashes Test for the first time since December 2021.

In his latest interview, Smith said he would lead in his own authentic way if called upon, as he stated, “I think the important thing is doing it my way.” I think when I get out on the field, I’ve got a certain style and the way I like to do things and I need to be authentic”

The 36-year-old All-Rounder also commented on Cummins being in good spirits. Being out of action since June 2025, Cummins is expected to return for the second test as Scott Boland is expected to start in the opener.

Having expressed confidence in his side, Smith and the Kangaroos will host England in Perth on November 21-25, 2025. It’s also the first Ashes series in Australia not to commence at the Gabba in Brisbane since the 1982-83 series.
