Sanjog Gupta Named ICC’s New CEO: A New Era for Global Cricket

Sanjog Gupta

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has ushered in a new chapter with the appointment of Sanjog Gupta as its Chief Executive Officer, effective today. Gupta, a seasoned leader in sports and media, steps into the role as the seventh CEO in the ICC’s storied history, poised to steer cricket toward unprecedented global heights.

Gupta, currently the CEO of Sports & Live Experiences at JioStar, brings a wealth of experience to the ICC. With over two decades in media, entertainment, and sports, his journey began as a journalist before he joined Star India in 2010. There, he climbed the ranks through key roles in content and strategy, eventually becoming Head of Sports at Disney & Star India in 2020. Following the 2024 merger of Viacom18 and Disney Star, he took the helm as CEO of JioStar Sports, showcasing his knack for navigating complex, high-stakes environments.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah hailed Gupta’s appointment, emphasizing his “extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialization.” Shah highlighted Gupta’s unique blend of industry insight, a deep connection to the cricket fan’s perspective, and a passion for leveraging technology to grow the game. “Sanjog’s leadership will be pivotal as we aim to break new ground, establish cricket as a mainstay in the Olympics, and expand its reach while strengthening its core markets,” Shah said.

The appointment comes on the heels of a rigorous global recruitment process launched in March 2025, which saw over 2,500 applications from 25 countries. The ICC’s HR & Remuneration Committee whittled the list down to 12 candidates, who were then evaluated by a Nominations Committee featuring heavyweights like ICC Deputy Chair Imran Khwaja, ECB Chair Richard Thompson, SLC President Shammi Silva, and BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia. Gupta’s nomination sailed through with unanimous approval from the ICC Board, a testament to his standout credentials.

In his first statement as CEO-designate, Gupta expressed his excitement for the role, noting cricket’s unique position with “almost 2 billion passionate fans worldwide.” He pointed to the sport’s bright future, fueled by the growing prominence of major events, the rise of women’s cricket, and new commercial opportunities. “Cricket’s inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and the rapid embrace of technology will be game-changers,” Gupta said. “I’m eager to work with ICC Member Boards to expand the sport’s global footprint and elevate the fan experience.”

As cricket stands on the cusp of transformative growth, Gupta’s leadership is expected to drive innovation and inclusivity, ensuring the sport continues to captivate fans and break boundaries worldwide.
