Dream11 Shuts Down Paid Contests, Embraces Free-to-Play Social Gaming Following New Law

Dream11

In a landmark move poised to reshape India’s digital gaming landscape, Dream11 – the country’s largest fantasy sports platform – has officially shut down all paid contests, pivoting entirely to a free-to-play online social game format. The decision, announced by the Dream11 team on August 23, 2025, comes in direct response to the newly enacted Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, passed by Parliament on August 21.

Why the Shift? The New Bill and Its Impact

The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 is a game-changer for India’s digital economy. Sparked by mounting concerns over addiction, financial ruin, and social distress linked to online money games, this legislation aims to safeguard the middle class and youth while supporting healthy e-sports and online social games.

Recent years have witnessed the rapid growth of online gaming – but not without consequences. Families have lost hard-earned savings, young people have struggled with addiction, and, in some tragic cases, financial distress tied to online betting has even led to suicides. Recognising the magnitude of this crisis, the government has taken decisive action to curb these dangers and guide the digital economy towards safe, constructive growth.

What Exactly Is Banned?

The new law enforces a complete ban on online money games across India. This includes both games of skill and games of chance where the user’s money is at stake, such as fantasy money gaming, online betting, and gambling. These platforms, which have been linked to addiction, financial losses, money laundering, and even threats to national security, are now strictly prohibited.

Not only is participation banned, but the law also prohibits advertising and promoting such platforms. Financial institutions are barred from processing payments for these games, and regulatory authorities have been empowered to block access to non-compliant websites and apps.

What Remains Legal and Supported?

The Bill takes a balanced approach-while stamping out exploitative money games, it recognises the immense potential of constructive digital recreation. E-sports, which refer to organised competitive video gaming, are now officially recognised as legitimate sports. The government is set to introduce guidelines, organise tournaments, and roll out incentives to support this booming sector.

Similarly, casual online social and educational games-those focused on entertainment, learning, or cultural skills-remain legal and encouraged. The Central Government will register and promote safe, age-appropriate games and conduct awareness campaigns to highlight their positive role in society.

Dream11’s Statement and Future Vision

Dream11’s founders, reflecting on their 18-year journey, emphasised their passion for making sports better for India. They shared their commitment to abide by the laws and expressed hope for progressive regulations in the future. The company stressed its ongoing vision to contribute to India’s sporting culture and global competitiveness, supporting initiatives to turn India into a global sporting superpower.

Beyond Dream11’s flagship fantasy contests, the Dream Team will continue developing other sports tech ventures such as FanCode, DreamSetGo, and Dream Game Studios, all with a focus on innovative, safe, and engaging experiences.

What Are the Penalties for Non-Compliance?

The penalties under the new Bill are strict and uncompromising. Anyone found offering or facilitating online money games now faces up to three years’ imprisonment and fines reaching ₹1 crore. Repeat offenders could see up to five years behind bars and even stiffer fines. Additionally, offences under the Bill are cognisable and non-bailable, granting authorities power for immediate arrest without a warrant.

Creating a Safer Digital Future

The government’s move reflects broader measures to nurture a safe, vibrant digital playground:

  • Promotion of e-sports and social gaming: Fosters innovation, digital literacy, and employment opportunities.
  • Stringent regulation of harmful platforms: Blocks advertisement, financial transactions, and access to illegal online games.
  • Protection for families and youth: Safeguards against predatory practices and misleading promises of easy wealth.

India’s parliament has set a new global benchmark in responsible gaming policy. The focus is clear: protect citizens from financial exploitation while empowering youth and creators through legal, skill-based recreation.

With Dream11 halting all real-money contests and fully embracing a free-to-play model, Indian users can still enjoy engaging, skill-focused social games-now with the assurance of safer, government-regulated digital experiences. This new era not only shields families from the risks of online money games but also paves the way for India to lead responsibly in the global digital gaming economy.
