Why are Gujarat Titans becoming unbeatable on seam-friendly pitches?
Gujarat Titans are looking like one of the strongest teams in IPL 2026, and a big reason behind their success is how perfectly their squad matches the Ahmedabad pitches. Their bowling attack has been outstanding, while their top order has delivered consistently. Together, this combination is making GT very difficult to beat.
One major reason behind GT’s recent success is the opening bowling partnership of Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada. For five matches in a row, both bowlers have bowled together in the powerplay, something that has never happened before for GT in IPL history. Interestingly, GT won all five of those matches.
Both bowlers are in excellent rhythm. Siraj has regularly touched speeds in the mid-140s, while Kagiso Rabada has crossed the 150 km/h mark many times. More importantly, both are bowling accurate lengths and taking full advantage of the help available from the pitches.
The Ahmedabad surface has strongly supported fast bowlers this season. Among all IPL venues that have hosted at least three matches, Ahmedabad has the best fast-bowling average of 21.35. It is also one of only two grounds where fast bowlers have conceded less than nine runs per over.
In GT’s recent match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the pitch once again helped seam bowlers. Even though GT scored only 168, it looked like a strong total because the surface offered movement and grip for bowlers. Batters had to work hard for every run.
Sai Sudharsan scored 61 off 44 balls, while Washington Sundar made 50 off 33 balls. These innings may not have looked explosive, but they were perfect for the conditions. The pitch was not easy for attacking cricket.
Once GT started bowling, the match quickly became one-sided. SRH’s powerful top order, including Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan, struggled badly. Siraj and Rabada kept bowling tight lines with good bounce and seam movement, making aggressive batting almost impossible.
GT’s bowling attack looks perfectly built for such conditions. Siraj brings swing and accuracy. Rabada adds pace and bounce. Jason Holder uses his height to create extra lift from the surface. Prasidh Krishna also hits hard lengths consistently. Then there is Rashid Khan, one of the best wrist spinners in world cricket, ready whenever spin is needed.
GT needed only five balls of spin in that game because the fast bowlers completely destroyed SRH. Sunrisers were bowled out for just 86 in 14.5 overs.
One of the smartest things about GT is their clear team planning. In the IPL, no team can build a perfect squad because every franchise works with the same auction purse. Most teams have strengths in some areas and weaknesses in others.
GT knows exactly what their strengths are. They have built the best bowling attack in the tournament and a very stable top order. On good days, these two departments do almost all the work, leaving very little pressure on the middle order.
However, flat batting pitches can still create problems for GT. On high-scoring surfaces where bowlers get little help, the difference between GT’s bowling and other teams becomes smaller. In those conditions, their batting weaknesses can become visible.
But on pitches like Ahmedabad, GT becomes extremely dangerous. The conditions allow their bowlers to dominate games, and their disciplined batting approach becomes very effective.
Many teams this season have spoken about inconsistent pitch conditions across venues. Delhi Capitals coach Hemang Badani even mentioned frustration about getting very different pitches in back-to-back home games. Since the BCCI now has more control over pitch preparation, teams do not always get surfaces they expect.
Still, Gujarat Titans will have no complaints. Ahmedabad pitches are matching their squad perfectly, just like Chennai Super Kings once dominated at Chepauk with their spin-heavy strategy.
Right now, GT’s team combination and home conditions are working together beautifully, and that is making them one of the biggest title contenders of IPL 2026.
