Kumar Sangakkara returns as Head Coach of the Rajasthan Royals, replacing Rahul Dravid
After a turbulent season, Rajasthan Royals fans are yearning for stability and direction. The team had a disappointing performance in IPL 2025, finishing ninth in the points table. Following this, the franchise has taken a decisive step ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
Rajasthan Royals have turned to a trusted figure as a new head coach to revive their fortunes, announcing that Kumar Sangakkara will return as head coach for IPL 2026. He will also continue in his role as Director of Cricket for RR. The franchise confirmed the move on Monday.
Sangakkara was previously the head coach of the Royals from 2021 to 2024. Under his leadership, RR reached the IPL 2022 final and returned to the playoffs in 2024, re-establishing the consistency that the team failed to replicate in 2025. Dravid, who coached RR in 2025, stepped down ahead of the new season.
Expressing his delight at resuming the role, Sangakkara said, “It is an honour to return as head coach and work with this talented team. I’m also pleased to have a strong coaching team. Vikram, Trevor, Shane, and Sid all bring valuable experience. We have a clear understanding of where we want to go as a team, and our aim is to build a team that plays with clarity, flexibility and purpose.”
Vikram Rathour has been promoted as assistant coach in Rajasthan’s coaching group, which will focus on batting development preparation. Shane Bond will continue as fast bowling coach, ensuring continuity within the pace attack. Trevor Penney and Sid Lahiri will also return as assistant coach and performance coach, respectively, further strengthening the support staff.
Kumar has always been seen helping young players in every possible way, which has led to a good bonding with them. His association with young Rajasthan Royals players, such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, is well known, as the youngster often seeks tips from the former legend. Fans will hope that his leadership can rekindle Rajasthan Royals’ confidence, consistency and ambitions of winning the championship in IPL 2026.
