IPL 2025: BCCI Bans Match day Practice, Limits Training Sessions for Teams

IPL

Big news coming from IPL 2025, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced new practice rules ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Unlike previous seasons, teams will not be allowed to practice on match days.

Each team will get only seven practice sessions before the tournament begins. Additionally, teams can play only two practice matches or have centre-wicket training sessions.

As per a Cricbuzz report originally quoted by BCCI,

“In the event that the home and away teams wish to practice at the same time, BCCI will ask the two Team Managers to try and resolve the double booking – either by one of the teams taking another session or by the two teams sharing the session. In the event that the two teams cannot resolve the double booking, BCCI will determine the practice times having considered the requests of both teams with the likely outcome that two 2 hour slots are created thereby giving both teams similar playing conditions with exclusive use of the ground (e.g. 18.00 – 20.00 & 20.00 – 22.00).”

BCCI’s Plan to Maintain Pitch Quality

BCCI’s main objective with these restrictions is that the playing conditions should remain top-notch throughout the tournament. Due to a long domestic season maintaining the pitches will be a tough task for the management.

During IPL 2025, teams will have access to two nets in the practice area and one side wicket on the main pitch for range hitting. At Mumbai venues, if both teams need to practice at the same time, each will be given two wickets. Open nets is not allowed under for any team on the match day during any circumstances.

In case of scheduling conflicts, the BCCI will have the final say on practice arrangements.
