Andre Russell Announces Shock IPL Retirement, Joins KKR as ‘Power Coach’ for 2026
In a stunning turn of events, West Indian superstar Andre Russell has announced his immediate retirement from playing in the Indian Premier League. The legendary all-rounder, recently released by the Kolkata Knight Riders, confirmed via social media that he will not seek a contract with any other franchise and will instead transition into a coaching role with his former team.
The 37-year-old will join KKR’s support staff for the 2026 season as their “power coach,” marking the end of a remarkable 12-year playing career in the league.

“It’s best to retire when fans ask ‘why? You still have some more in you,’ instead of ‘yeah, you should have done it years back,'” Russell stated, explaining his decision to step away while his legacy remains intact.
Russell’s IPL credentials are nothing short of extraordinary. In 140 matches, he amassed 2,651 runs at a devastating strike rate of 174.18 and took 123 wickets. His career, predominantly in KKR’s purple and gold, was decorated with two championship titles (2014 and 2024) and two MVP awards (2015 and 2019). He finishes as the seventh-highest six-hitter in IPL history, with 223 maximums.
Despite his historic contributions, a noticeable dip in form during IPL 2025—scoring 167 runs and taking 8 expensive wickets preceded KKR’s decision to release him, freeing up ₹12 crore from their purse.
Russell revealed that the thought of playing for another franchise was unsettling. “I felt weird to see myself in any colour other than purple & gold… leading me to a few sleepless nights,” he said. Conversations with KKR management, including CEO Venky Mysore and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, paved the way for this new chapter, allowing him to remain within the “familiar” setup.
While he closes the door on the IPL, Russell clarified that he will continue to play in other franchise T20 leagues across the globe.
