Traveling across the world of Where Winds Meet becomes much easier once you have your own mount. The map is massive, and moving on foot quickly becomes slow and unsafe, especially with enemies and long travel routes. The good news is that you can unlock your first horse very early, and the game gives you several ways to collect more mounts as you progress.
This guide explains how to unlock your first mount, how to get better ones, and what you should know about mount skills, bonding, and upgrades.
How to Unlock Mounts in Where Winds Meet?
1. Complete the Opening Questline
Your first mount is gifted in the main story. After the tutorial is the part in the story where the game sends you to the General’s Shrine when the chapter Heaven Has No Pier is playing.
On the way there you come up to a rude NPC called Roundy who is riding a horse that he stole.
Once you get close to him, you have to chase him down to the end of the path, where he will fall off his horse when you attempt to interact with him. Once he falls off, you will get a pop-up indicating that you have obtained a horse.
This is the first horse in your stable, and you unlock the ability to call and mount your horse.
2. Steal a Horse from NPCs
If you want a new mount and want to get it faster without spending any resources, you can steal it from any NPC that is riding a horse.
When the NPC is close enough, a prompt will pop up that says, Snatch Horse. Wait for the prompt to appear, and ride off with the horse before any NPCs can get to you.
This is also the fastest method, but also the most risk, as any NPCs that were nearby will turn hostile temporarily.
3. Capture a Wild Horse
Wild horses wandering in the world are also obtainable and tamable. They do take a bit more effort, but capture and payment are not needed.
To capture a wild horse:
- Sneak up from the back.
- Look out for the Capture Horse prompt and complete it.
- Do the taming minigame, matching the direction pieces and square in the center.
If you succeed, the horse joins your stable. If you fail, the horse escapes. Wild captures require good reflexes, but they also have their rewards.
4. Buy Mounts from the Shop
Purchasing mounts using real money or in-game currency is also an option.
To do this, you have to go into the shop from the main menu and then into the Appearance tab.
After that, you just select the horse icon and you can see the many mounts they have available, some simply for cosmetics, and some of special Ingenious abilities.
All the mounts that you purchase get directly added to your collection and can be summoned whenever you want.
5. Earn Mounts Through Exploration Rewards
To view the Exploration Rewards category for horses, select Appearance, and click Mounts. There are two categories.
Open World Stealing/Capturing: Rewards for riding horses in the open world and stealing or capturing them.
Premium: Ingenious mounts are those that are either purchased or drawn.
Right-click targeted horses in the Exploration Reward section to select the How to Acquire drop-down and click Capture Horse or Snatch Horse to determine the closest waypoint where this mount can be obtained.
Mount Skills and What They Do
All mounts have unique abilities that can be used for traveling or bringing additional utility to the player.
Standard horses have useful skills that are often quite basic, like having increased stamina or faster speed. Ingenious horses are those that have strong utility, like auto-pathing, treasure detection (or other detection), and high mobility easily rivaling teleportation.
Picking a mount that matches your playstyle can be made easier by understanding potential skills that are available.
How to Increase Bonding in Where Winds Meet?
Bonding determines how loyal and responsive your mount becomes. A horse with high bonding is easier to control and may unlock special effects based on its breed.
- Ride your horse often
- Feed it treats
- Keep it away from hazards
- Avoid abandoning it in dangerous areas
Stronger bonding leads to smoother movement and better performance in long journeys.
Types of Mounts You Can Unlock
The game features several horse breeds, each with distinct attributes:
- Standard Horses – balanced and reliable
- Mongolian Horses – stable on rough terrain
- Appaloosas – fast and ideal for long routes
- Mustangs – high stamina and quick acceleration
Rare mounts generally have better stats and stronger skills. Unlocking mounts in Where Winds Meet is simple, but keeping a good stable of horses requires exploration, bonding, and smart choices.
