After years of waiting, Borderlands 4 is set to launch on September 12, 2025. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC at launch. However, if you are on Nintendo Switch 2 expect the game to be released by October 3rd, 2025.
There’s no word yet on whether last-gen consoles will get a version, but the focus seems firmly on next-gen hardware
From trailers to gameplay details, here’s everything you need to know about the next big entry in Gearbox’s iconic looter-shooter franchise.
Borderlands 4 Gameplay Preview
The Borderlands series has always stood out for its wild humor, chaotic gunplay, and unique cel-shaded art style.
Borderlands 4 sticks to its looter-shooter roots but brings several exciting changes. The gun variety is bigger than ever, with procedurally generated weapons that not only change in stats but also in how they behave.
Early footage shows new weapon types, including energy-based guns and modular firearms that can be customized mid-combat.
Movement and combat also appear to be more fluid. Characters can now chain abilities, slide into cover more naturally, and use expanded skill trees that allow for deeper specialization.
You can seamlessly switch between solo and multiplayer, with progress carrying over no matter where you play. A nice new touch is the ability to fast-travel directly to teammates, which saves time when exploring such a huge world. Crossplay is also fully supported, so you can team up with friends on any platform.

Borderlands 4 Storyline
Every Borderlands game introduces a new group of Vault Hunters, and Borderlands 4 is no different. While their full backstories remain under wraps, the trailer revealed four fresh faces, each with unique powers.
One seems focused on heavy weaponry, another on stealth and gadgets, a third on elemental magic-like attacks, and the fourth on support and healing.
The story appears to dive deeper into the mystery of the Vaults and their cosmic origins. With the new villain threatening not just Pandora but the wider galaxy, Borderlands 4 feels like it will expand the scope of the universe in ways fans haven’t seen before.
The Prototype Gun system, teased in early demos, shows Gearbox is still experimenting with quirky mechanics to keep gameplay fresh.
On the other hand, some players worry about whether the looting system might become too grind-heavy. Still, based on the trailers and hands-on previews, Borderlands 4 seems ready to deliver the chaotic fun fans have been waiting for.
