Scotland Include Afghan-Born Quick Zainullah Ihsan in Surprise T20 World Cup Squad

Scotland have unveiled a 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with Afghan-born fast bowler Zainullah Ihsan earning a maiden international call-up as the only uncapped player in the group. His inclusion highlights the first squad selected by new head coach Owen Dawkins.

Ihsan, who recently qualified to represent Scotland, has impressed at youth and ‘A’ team levels with his genuine pace and skill. Steve Snell, head of performance at Cricket Scotland, said, “We’re delighted for him and excited to see how he performs on his first international tour.”

Richie Berrington will once again lead the side, which features 11 players from Scotland’s 2024 World Cup squad. Newcomers to the global event include Tom Bruce, Finlay McCreath, and Oliver Davidson, all of whom have been part of Scotland’s recent T20 and ODI setups.

Scotland’s late entry into the tournament came as a surprise after Bangladesh withdrew over security concerns, with the ICC inviting Scotland as the next-highest ranked team. Head coach Dawkins acknowledged the whirlwind preparation, stating, “It’s been a whirlwind forty-eight hours… We have no doubt we have players in our squad that can make a real impact.”

With limited lead time, Scotland have also named two travelling reserves Jasper Davidson and Jack Jarvis along with three non-travelling reserves. The squad remains subject to visa approvals.

Scotland will open their campaign against two-time champions West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on February 7.
