Injured Shamar Joseph ruled out of India Tests; Layne joins squad

Shamar Joseph

West Indies have been dealt a major blow ahead of their two-match Test series against India, as star fast bowler Shamar Joseph has been ruled out with an undisclosed injury. Cricket West Indies confirmed the setback and announced the inclusion of 22-year-old Barbadian all-rounder Johann Layne as Joseph’s replacement. Layne brings strong first-class credentials, with 66 wickets at an average of 22.28, complemented by handy batting contributions (495 runs with two fifties) from 19 matches. He joins a pace attack led by Alzarri Joseph, Jayden Seales, and Anderson Phillip, while spin options include captain Roston Chase, Jomel Warrican, and Khary Pierre.

Joseph, who has captured 51 wickets in 11 Tests at an impressive average of 21.66, was expected to lead the Windies attack on Indian soil. His absence will be felt, particularly after his spectacular performances against Australia earlier this year. He will be re-evaluated before the Bangladesh white-ball tour starting October 18.
The updated West Indies squad for the India Tests in Ahmedabad features Roston Chase (Captain), Jomel Warrican (Vice-captain), Kevlon Anderson, Alick Athanaze, John Campbell, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Justin Greaves, Shai Hope, Tevin Imlach, Alzarri Joseph, Johann Layne, Brandon King, Anderson Phillip, Khary Pierre, and Jayden Seales.

With the first Test starting on October 2, Layne’s debut will be closely watched as West Indies aim to compete strongly despite losing their pace spearhead.
