ICC Acts Against Pakistan’s Rauf and Farhan for On-Field Conduct in IND-PAK Clash; Suryakumar Yadav Also Reprimanded
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially taken disciplinary action against Pakistan players Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan for their on-field conduct during the high-voltage Asia Cup Super Four match against India on September 21 in Dubai. The sanctions follow a formal complaint lodged by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Both players were found guilty of a Level 1 offence under the ICC’s Player Code of Conduct after a hearing. The charges stemmed from actions deemed to have breached the code’s clause prohibiting political statements.
Pacer Haris Rauf was fined for mimicking a crashing plane with his hand gesture during the game, an act interpreted as an unsavoury reference to recent tensions between the two nations. In addition to a fine, which involved a deduction of a portion of his match fee, Rauf was strongly reprimanded for “bringing the game into disrepute.”
Opener Sahibzada Farhan, who scored a 45-ball 58 in Pakistan’s six-wicket defeat, also received a reprimand. His offence was wielding his bat like a gun to celebrate his half-century, a gesture seen as a symbolic nod to the hostilities between India and Pakistan.
The hearing was conducted by ICC officials Richie Richardson and Sally Higgins. Pakistan’s team manager, Naveed Cheema, was also present.
In a related development, the ICC also held a separate hearing on Thursday involving Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav. The Indian skipper was reprimanded and advised against making political statements. This action pertains to his previous expression of solidarity with the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and the Indian Army after the league stage fixture on September 14.
These incidents have added a contentious layer to an already fierce sporting rivalry. India, having beaten Pakistan twice in the tournament, is now set for a third showdown against their arch-rivals in the Asia Cup final on Sunday, September 28.
