England Docked WTC Points After Thrilling Lord’s Triumph

England test

England’s gripping 22-run victory over India in the third Test at Lord’s has come at a cost, with the team losing two World Test Championship (WTC) points and 10% of their match fees due to a slow over rate. The penalty has seen England slide from second to third in the WTC standings, with their points dropping from 24 to 22 and their percentage points falling from 66.67% to 61.11%, now trailing Australia and Sri Lanka.

The match, described as one of the most captivating Tests in recent memory, saw both sides locked in a fierce battle. After identical first-innings totals of 387, the game boiled down to a tense second-innings chase. India, tasked with 193 to win, pushed the game into the final session, driven by resilient partnerships from Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj. However, Shoaib Bashir, battling a broken finger, delivered the decisive blow by dismissing Siraj, sparking wild celebrations as England took a 2-1 series lead.

Standout performances included Joe Root and KL Rahul’s centuries, Jofra Archer’s fiery pace, and Bumrah’s five-wicket haul. England captain Ben Stokes accepted the over-rate penalty, avoiding a formal hearing. Unfortunately, Bashir’s injury has ruled him out of the series, with Liam Dawson stepping in for the fourth Test at Old Trafford, starting July 23.
